Is the Bowflex SelectTech 552 a good buy?

My whole-hearted answer to this is YES!  Amazon currently has them for under $300, which is actually cheaper than I have seen them anywhere else.  But even if you were to pay more, there is no doubt that you are getting a better deal than if you go and try to buy a full set of dumbbells. Even if you were to get the dumbbells that you need to start working out this week, what are you going to do next week when you are already stronger and need more weight?  Go out and buy another pair?  The costs of traditional dumbbells increase as you grow.  The Bowflex SelectTech 552 grows with you. When you need more weight, you can add it.  It’s a brilliant idea.

Are they well made?

The quality of the previous model of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 was tarnished by a plastic clip that held the plates onto the dumbbells.  Fortunately, the newer version of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 has been fixed.  They are now building it with a metal clip, which holds up to use.  (Duh!)  In addition, the dial to add or remove weight can only be turned if it is on the base.

Can you trust Bowflex?

I believe you can.  I know that many television ads are put out by companies that will disappear next year.  Bowflex has been around, and judging by the equipment they are putting out there, they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.  On top of that, if you buy the Bowflex SelectTech 552 from a company such as Amazon (more affordable that way too), you can always return it if something goes wrong.

Reviews on Amazon

The reviews on Amazon are pretty positive.  There were a few complaints that I have found, but they seem to be related to the older model and that pesky plastic clip.  Even with those included, it averages out to a little over 4 stars as the average review. That’s pretty impressive! “In summary, if you’re doing P90X, or any other home workout routine that requires you to switch weights quickly, this is the dumbbell for you. Also if you’re going for P90X know that the 552 version covered the weight I needed for every single exercise (I’m 5’11′ and 195 lean muscle).” –Ronald W. Smiley

No question great design – 5 out of 5 rating for sure. Support is a 4, pretty good. Where they fall down is on ruggedness. There may be improvements in the 2009 versions but the main problem with my 2008 set is many of the parts are made with plastics.” –Robert R. Rowntree

As you can see, the reviews for the Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells are very positive.  If you are with the cost and length of the dumbbells, these are definitely a solid piece of home gym equipment.
